Hi everyone,

I am Mayke Smits and I am a 14 year old girl who lives in the Netherlands. I am in the 4th grade of Havo TTO at the secondary school. TTO means that I most of my lessons are in English. This also means that this year, I got the opportunity to join the trip to South-Africa. We are going to go to South-Africa in February, and we will be going for two weeks. There we will do cultural activities, but also get a buddy to get to know the culture even more closely.
In order to go on this trip, we have to prepare ourselves. This is why we had to do some research on where we are going, and what to expect. These are some of the things I looked into so that I am prepared and know what I can expect when going there:

The language:
In South-Africa, almost 80% of the population can read and write. The biggest part of the population speaks Afrikaans which is really similar to the dutch language. Here are some words that look the same:
milkshake -> melkschommel
lucifer -> vuurhoutje

Western Cape:
South-Africa has 9 provinces. We will be visiting Genadendal which is located in the province of Western Cape. The capital city, Cape Town is also located in this province. The Western Cape is really important for the agriculture and the trade. They grow grapes and other vegetables and fruits. Also fishing is an important thing there. The biggest source of income are the fish. The Cape of good hope, Muizenberg and other sightseeings, you can find in the Western Cape.

Nelson Mandela:
In Nelson Mandela's childhood, life for the black was really difficult. There was a lot of difference between the rights of white people, and the rights of black people. In 1984 the Apartheid became the system. Life for the black became even worse. A lot of black people ended up being shot or in prison. Nelson Mandela was a man who stood up for his rights. He ended up in prison for being the leader of the National African Congres group. In the 27 years of prison he had still kept courage. When he finally was released from prison, more and more laws from the Apartheid were abolished. In 1994 there were elections and he put himself up for it. A lot of people voted for him and he ended up being president. In 2013 he died of a lunginfection.

These are the things I looked into. I will keep my blog updated with the preparations of this journey!
See you soon,
Mayke
